Pad mount transformers

A pad mount transformer sits at ground level on a concrete pad, sealed inside a locked, tamper-resistant steel cabinet. It takes distribution voltage from an underground feed and steps it down to the voltage a site actually runs on, which makes it the usual choice for commercial buildings, industrial plants, and field facilities where the public or other crews may be nearby.

Most are liquid-filled, with the windings and core sitting in insulating oil that also carries heat away. The cabinet separates the high-voltage and low-voltage compartments, so connections stay protected and the unit is safe to approach.

Commonly specified

  • Single-phase or three-phase
  • Radial feed or loop feed
  • Live-front or dead-front connections
  • Mineral oil or high fire point fluid such as FR3
  • No-load tap changer for voltage adjustment
  • Pad-lockable cabinet with gauges and pressure relief
  • Fusing, switches, and lightning arresters

Pole-mounted transformers

Pole-mounted transformers hang from utility poles and make the last voltage step on an overhead line, feeding homes, shops, and remote sites off the distribution system. They are compact, oil-filled, and built to stay in service outdoors for decades, which is why rebuilding a sound unit is a practical alternative to buying new.

Many are conventional, with protection added separately on the pole. Others are completely self-protected, known as CSP, with a breaker and fuse built into the tank.

Commonly specified

  • Conventional or CSP (completely self-protected)
  • kVA rating matched to the load
  • Primary and secondary voltage, plus tap range
  • Single units, or banked for three-phase service
  • Lightning arresters and internal fault detectors
  • FR3 fluid, wildlife guards, and other options

Dry-type transformers

Dry-type transformers use air, not oil, to cool the windings, with solid insulation around the coils. With no liquid to contain or sample, they suit buildings, control rooms, plants, and other indoor or enclosed locations where fire safety and low upkeep come first.

They range from low-voltage units that power lighting, motors, and controls up to medium-voltage designs used in distribution and unit substations. Matching the unit to its enclosure, load, and ventilation is where most of the selection work happens.

Commonly specified

  • Single-phase or three-phase
  • Low-voltage or medium-voltage
  • NEMA 1 for indoor, NEMA 3R for outdoor
  • Temperature rise of 80, 115, or 150°C
  • Aluminum or copper windings
  • Vacuum-pressure-impregnated coils
  • K-rated designs for non-linear loads

Parts and components

A transformer often goes down over one small part: a bushing, a fuse, a gauge, or a valve. The right replacement has to match the original on rating, interface, and fit, so the part number or the transformer's nameplate is the best place to start.

Send us a part number, or the make, model, and nameplate details of the unit, and tell us what you need to get running again.
